Temperatures in the high 40s and low 50s with autumn sunshine made for a great day full of racing at Central Iowa Trail Association’s 2012 Dirty Duathlon on Saturday, November 3rd.
The headline event began at 1:00. The runners for the Dirty Du Relay lined up in the front row, while the entrants in the Men’s Solo Dirty Du and the Women’s Solo Dirty Du knew they had a daunting task ahead. All categories were one run lap (approximately two miles), plus four bike laps (approximately fourteen miles), plus another run lap. The relay allowed two team members to split the job, with one member running and the other biking.
In the Dirty Du Relay, Ryan Van Houweling, a Cat 1 mountain bike racer, met Nick Paulson, a junior on the Ankeny High School cross country team, for the first time at the race. After Nick’s great first running leg, Ryan had a head start on the competition, but his race bike was packed away for the season and he was riding on his singlespeed. Knowing the that “Cam is never slow, [Ryan] was running scared nearly the entire time.” Nick did well again on the second run lap, and Ryan and Nick won first place with a comfortable gap and a time of 1:37:23.
Cam Kirkpatrick, another Cat 1 mountain bike racer, teamed up with his runner from many previous Dirty Dus, Kristy Feldman, member of Runablaze, Iowa’s Elite Distance Running Club, to take second place with a time of 1:41:43. Andy Bach, yet another Cat 1 mountain bike racer, teamed up with Jorvik Harris, another junior from the Ankeny High School cross country team, to secure third place with a time of 1:44:52.
The Men’s Solo Dirty Du was won by Chad Vande Lune in a time of 1:52:43. Aaron Wrabek took second with 1:54:52, and Nathan Cline took third with 1:55:09.
The Women’s Solo Dirty Du was won by Lisa Vetterlein in a time of 1:58:31. Evie Johnson came in second with 2:11:12, and Cheryl Dralle, in her first solo Dirty Du, came in third with 2:13:40.
Off the podium, there were many other good stories that show what local races are all about.
Michele Smith-Jones had planned on being part of a relay, but when faced with the prospect of not being able to compete, she chose to do the race solo. When she rolled in at the end of the bike and was facing the final two-mile run, it was looking very difficult. But, her VeloRosa teammate, Megan Kelly, who had already completed the run legs of a relay, jumped in with her post-race beverage in hand and ran with Michele all the way to the finish to show her support.
Relay teams included those racing to try to achieve the podium, friends out having fun, husbands and wives spending the day together together, and parent/child teams such as Tom Anderson and his daughter Maddie, Maria Ruhtenberg and her daughter Hannah, Jason Alread and his son Adrian, and Robert Carter and his son Austin.
Trail Run and Doggie Du
The day began at 9:00 with trail running: Men’s Trail Run, Women’s Trail Run, and Doggie Du. All races were two laps, approximately four miles.
Sean Noonan won the Men’s Trail Run in a time of 30:44. Tony Schubert took second with 32:23, and Brent Osborne took third with 33:44.
Megan Hill won the Women’s Trail Run in a time of 50:45, and Amy Knight came in second with 52:09.
Jeff Anker and his 5-or-6-year-old Jack Russell Terrier, Cici, “the best running partner,” took first place in the Doggie Du with a time of 35:12. Lacey Paine teamed up with her 3-year-old golden doodle, “an avid runner” named Sampson, to take second in a time of 41:43. Jeff Mertz brought Drindy, his 15-month-old boxer who’s been training 10 miles a week, and secured third place with 42:54.
Sprint Du
A small field lined up at 11:00 for the Men’s Sprint Du and the Women’s Sprint Du, ready to tackle one run lap (approximately two miles) and two bike laps (approximately seven miles).
Jonah Penningroth, age 14, took the lead in the run portion of the Men’s Sprint Du, but Jubil Young and Tom Pesek passed him in the first bike lap. It wasn’t until the final, treacherous, steep climb from the Roller Coaster trail into the Oaks, that Tom was able to make the pass and take the lead for the win in a time of 1:01:34 over Jubil’s 1:01:37. Jonah finished third in 1:04:41.
Dorothy Hecht won the women’s race in a time of 1:33:33. Zoe Roccasecca, a 12-year-old mountain biker brand new to trail running, placed second after completing a shortened course.
Kids Du
About 15 kids lined up for the free Kids Du at noon. They biked around the pond once and then ran the lap. Plaques were awarded to Adam Wince for 1st, Callah Robinson for 2nd, and Oliver Paine for 3rd. Every participant received a token for a free ice cream at Culver’s.
